Kulturlaboratorium – call in English

European cities and European culture are changing fundamentally, for many reasons. Crises, globalization, new borders and demands for still more focus on sustainability, there is a need to let new and experimenting approaches blossom. We want to contribute to those change processes and strengthen the understanding of how we can all get better at making more sustainable interventions, reflections, networks, and institutions.

We have started some far-reaching projects around cities, culture, communities, art, and sustensivity, through which we wish to challenge European cities ability to connect to sustainability through cultural approaches. We can take nothing for granted. We may love the butterfly nests of Turku2011, but do they change anything? We want to cast our eyes on the near, the local, the direct consequences, while keeping an eye for the infinite and the global. This is why we are launching the Sustensive Culture Lab 1 in 2011.

Sustainability is forged in the encounter. This is where we find the forces to change and to uphold – the power of resilience and transformation. So we want to set up an encounter, between the old factory on Prags Boulevard, which was turned into a cultural experiment; 20 Danish and other European lovers of culture, with their feet on the ground and their heads in a sustainable city. And four groups of local cultural innovators, that are changing the neighborhood. We do not need to save the place, we will simply set up encounters that will inspire both parts – and call in 4 workshop leaders to throw new perspectives upon the whole complex of issues.

The Sustensive Culture Lab is a 4 + 1 day workshop, reaching from deeply philosophical and sociological input, to specific and playful approaches to each other and the local innovators. The lab will lead to a small exhibition and to more network formations able to connect the local and the global, and provide us all with better ideas of how to combine theory and practice, ideals and realities, and transformation with resilience. The lab will take place in Danish and English.

FACTS

The lab is open for all. If you want to take part, please send us 1-2 pages, by July 5th 2011, telling us about your approach to cultures of sustainability, with examples, if possible, theoretically or practically founded. Our only demand is that you remain open to the transdiscilplinarity of both more academic and more activist or artist perspectives on sustainability. Attach your latest CV. We will try to fit everyone in and will get back to you on July 15th at the latest.

We are trying to raise funds to lower the fees – and we are trying to get accommodation for everyone who needs it. There are also 5 free places for students or others who are willing to help out 20 hours before, during or after the lab.

The CultureLab is led by Oleg Koefoed, Ph.d., action-philosopher, member of several networks and groups working to develop the understanding of culture in sustainability and sustainability in culture, and co-founder of Cultura21 International and ASSiST2010 summer school.
